“Glorious literature in an idyllic, rural setting”

Presented by Fogo Parish Church in conjunction with the Berwick Literary Festival, ‘Sugar, Slaves and High Society’ is the launch of ‘a wonderfully well-written book’ by R.P.J. Blake. His book is based on unpublished documents and is extensively illustrated. It provides unique insights into the social, military, sporting and artistic worlds of the 19th. century. The men and women of the Grants of Kilgraston were colourful, idiosyncratic, wayward and talented. It is a story of social advancement, extravagant lifestyles and concealed slave exploitation.

“The author has achieved a remarkable feat in pulling together the disparate threads of an exotic, and at times chaotic, family story, and woven them into a tapestry rich in character, art, adventure, intrigue and, perhaps most importantly, humanity.” (Jason Brooke)

Come and listen to the author, enjoy his illustrated presentation, learn more of a famous Scottish family and its story of adventurers and artists who rose from humble beginnings to become leading figures in Victorian society.
